First time in Las Vegas: what to know

Vegas rewards a little preparation. A few things surprise almost every first-timer: the resort fee at check-in, how long it takes to walk anywhere, and how fast show tickets sell out. Here's the practical list so nothing catches you off guard.

Resort fees and check-in

Nearly every resort adds a daily resort fee (typically USD 35–55 plus tax) covering Wi-Fi, gym and pool access. It's charged by the hotel at check-in, on top of the room rate, wherever you book. Check-in usually starts at 3pm; early check-in is often available for a fee or with status.

Distances and getting around

The Strip is over four miles long — 'next door' can mean a 25-minute walk through casino floors. Use the free trams (Bellagio–Aria–Park MGM and Mandalay Bay–Luxor–Excalibur), the Monorail on the east side, or rideshares from designated pickup zones. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable.

Shows and restaurants: book ahead

Headline residencies, Cirque du Soleil and the top tables sell out days or weeks ahead, especially on weekends. Book the two or three things you'd hate to miss before you fly; leave the rest to spontaneity.

Money matters

Tipping is expected: a few dollars for valet and bellhops, 15–20% at restaurants, a dollar or two per drink at the bar — even on comped drinks while playing. Budget for it. And gambling is 21+, with ID checked routinely.
